TUSKING

Male narwhals are sometimes observed crossing tusks with each other above the surface of the water; this behavior is known as “tusking.” In the past, this was believed to be an aggressive behavior, but researchers now believe it is a friendly social behavior.

ARCTIC

The Arctic—the northernmost polar region of the globe—is home to many cetacean species for part of the year, while others live there year-round. Although belugas migrate hundreds of miles between their summer and winter habitats, they don’t ever leave the cold waters of the north. Bowhead whales spend their lives in the Arctic; their extremely thick blubber—up to 1.5 feet (0.45 meters) thick—helps them withstand colder temperatures. Narwhals also live exclusively in the Arctic, using cracks in sea ice as passageways for their migrations across Arctic waters.

Cetaceans such as the killer whale, Arnoux’s beaked whale, humpback whale, and Antarctic minke whale spend time in Antarctic waters at the globe’s South Pole.
